Vocational Pillar of Balance

Finding Your Purpose Through Action

What are you passionate about? What lights you up? What makes you feel alive and purposeful?

But what if you have no idea?

That’s okay. That’s actually where most people start. And here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t find your vocation by sitting and thinking about it endlessly. You find it by doing.

In my opinion, the best doorway into Vocation is volunteering.

Start young if you can. But honestly, start wherever you are right now.

Find something in your community that you’re interested in – even mildly curious about – and then see what volunteering opportunities they have. Animal shelter? Food bank? Community garden? Youth mentorship? Environmental cleanup? Arts programs? Senior center?

Show up. Get socially and physically involved in the community you live in. Through action, through service, through actually being in different spaces and roles, you start to discover what resonates. What energizes you. What feels meaningful.

Take an Enneagram test (or Myers-Briggs, or StrengthsFinder – whatever tool speaks to you) and see where you fall. Then find a vocation that suits who you actually are, not who you think you should be.

Yes, we can adapt. Yes, we can compromise to serve a greater good. That’s part of being human, part of living in community.

But do not give away your joy.

Your vocation – your calling, your purpose, your work in this world – should feed you, not drain you. It should align with who you are at your core.

That’s the difference between a job and a vocation. A vocation suits your soul.

Why Vocational Balance Matters

Vocational balance isn’t about hustle or status.
It’s about alignment — between who you are and how you contribute.

Your vocation asks a deeper question than “What do you do?”
It asks: Who do you want to be in your community?

Tools like the Enneagram or other personality frameworks can help you understand how you’re wired — your strengths, your tendencies, your natural gifts. These tools don’t define you, but they can guide you toward a vocation that actually suits who you are.

Yes, we can adapt.
Yes, we can compromise to serve a greater good.

But do not give away your joy.

Your vocation — whether it’s a job, a calling, caregiving, volunteering, or creative work — should feed you, not drain you. It should align with your values and allow you to contribute without losing yourself.

That’s the difference between a job and a vocation.

A vocation suits your soul.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “vocational balance” actually mean?

Vocational balance means being in right relationship with your purpose. It’s not about having the perfect job — it’s about contributing in ways that align with who you are and bring meaning, connection, and joy.

What if I don’t know what I’m passionate about?

That’s normal. Passion often comes after action. Volunteering is one of the most powerful ways to discover what matters to you. Purpose shows up when you show up.

Does vocation have to be paid work?

You might feel disconnected from your No. Vocation includes caregiving, volunteering, mentoring, learning, creating, and serving within your community. Paid work is only one expression of vocation — not the definition of it.

How do I know if I’m out of vocational balance?

Burnout, resentment, disconnection, or a sense of performing instead of contributing are common signs. These are signals inviting you to realign — not failures.

Can I share my work or become a local expert?

Yes. She Balance exists to elevate women who are actively serving and shaping their communities. If you feel called to share your work, your story, or your gifts, this pillar makes space for that.
